On February 14, 2013, ten months after the murder of Itzel Janet Méndez Pérez, several hundred people gathered in the center of San Cristóbal de las Casas with white lanterns marked with the names of the 91 Chiapanecan victims of feminicide that died between January 2012 and February 2013. The goal of the demonstration was to break with the consumer focus of Valentine’s Day and continue demanding justice for the victims of violence against women in Mexico: reminding people that true love is not violent.
